If you have not heard about this company before, then does not sound so surprising. After all, they are an MLM, so their obscurity is to be expected. MLMs like Ann Summers use a completely different marketing tactic compared to regular businesses.
To be honest, I am glad that you decide to research this company first instead of taking their word. That step saved you from a lot of things that you will definitely regret. Aside from that, doing your own research will reveal quite a lot of facts about the MLM, and will also help you learn more about these companies in the process.

MLM members make money by selling products and recruiting new members. In pyramid schemes, members could only make money by recruiting people. Pyramid schemes are illegal and banned by the FTC.
As a disclaimer, I am not affiliated with Ann Summers in any way.

What is Ann Summers?
Ann Summers is a multi-level marketing company that sells sex toys and lingerie. The company was founded by Michael Caborn-Waterfield in 1970. The other MLM company that I have reviewed which sells the same things is Pure Romance.
It seems like not only the products are quite controversial, but the company name is too. Looks like the company was named after the company’s rumored mistress named Annice (Ann) Summers.
The company started only as a traditional shop in London, and was able to expand into six more shops. A couple of years later, the first shop in Wardour St. was sold by the founder to David and Ralph Gold.
Ann Summers is facing quite the challenge of selling products because not a lot of people really want to openly discuss using sex toys, thus hurting their sales. David Gold’s daughter, Jacqueline, decided to implement the MLM business model in 1981 to help the company grow.
Ann Summers did not abandon its traditional shops though, but instead, they presented people with the opportunity to be product ambassadors for the MLM front.
How Do MLMs Work?
Before we continue with the Ann Summers review, I will be discussing some inside information about MLMs. In this section, we talk about MLMs in general. This means that in this section, you will be learning about what tactics MLMs use, so in the process, you can learn to avoid them.
The main focus of MLMs is in their recruiting process. This is why you will notice that the quality-control for MLM products are barely there, with someone not even having it at all. They do not really care about what their products are like, because they know that people will keep paying for them.
If you are wondering why the recruiting is encouraged, it is because this company needs a place to unload its useless products. It is also the reason why MLM products are so overpriced, to the point of it being so ridiculous.
Regardless, the target market of MLMs are not actual customers, but the members they recruit. These members are required to meet ridiculously high sales quotas. If they fail to do so, they lose the rights to sell the company’s products, which could mean a huge loss if they already bought too many.
MLMs are well-aware that their products are of subpar quality compared to other companies. They know that they would not be able to unload their products if they do not adopt a direct-selling model. In this business model, the people who join have nothing to gain but everything to lose.
Just bear in mind that if something sound too good to be true, then it is most likely isn’t.
Is Ann Summers a Pyramid Scheme?
Since Ann Summers members earn money both by selling services and recruiting new members, then it is safe to say that Ann Summers is not a pyramid scheme.
However, since Ann Summers is still an MLM, do not expect to make money if you have no plans on recruiting people. Recruiting will earn you significantly more money than actual product selling, and is more encouraged.
This just makes Ann Summers look like a pyramid scheme in disguise, doesn’t it?
Is Ann Summers a Scam?
No, Ann Summers is not a scam.
However, if you think this is enough for you to jump in Ann Summers’s so-called opportunity straight away, then I suggest that you hold your horses. This is just the most basic thing, so don’t go signing up for this company right away.
Before making your decision, I suggest that you do a thorough research on the MLM first. You can consult some of the sources I listed below. Take note that you can definitely consult any source you want to, but the sources I listed below are the best kinds to consult, for various reasons listed.
What Sources Should You Look For?
There are three kinds of sources that you can consult when it comes to researching MLMs. There are other kinds of sources, but I believe that these three sources will be of the most help to you.
Luckily, you found the best source available online, with this Ann Summers review. This review is an example of a third-party review, which in the name itself, states that it is published by entities that have no ties to any MLM companies. This means that they are free to publish any information they would like, despite how it could affect an MLM’s reputation.
However, websites that publish reviews conduct thorough research and fact-checking in order to publish accurate information. Of course, these websites want their reviews to be the primary source of information for people seeking answers regarding MLMs.
If you would like to engage in discussion with other people regarding these companies, then I suggest joining forums. Most forums I could find engage in active discussion, since they have thousands of members under their helm. Their numbers also keep growing.
Forum threads are also being updated daily, meaning that you can always find the freshest information available for queries you may have. These forum members are more than willing to answer any of your questions, as their goal is to have as many people educated as possible.
How to Make Money from Ann Summers
Since Ann Summers is an MLM, there are only two ways to make money with the company. and these are:
- Selling products
- Recruiting members
These are only the basic ways with which you can get earnings in Ann Summers. Take note that there are also ways which you can take advantage of to give your earnings a boost. These are called bonuses, and it takes quite some work to be able to qualify for them.
The main concern that people have towards MLMs are how aggressive they could be in terms of recruiting. To be honest, they can be quite annoying. Remember that hunbot that brought you here? You are merely a victim of a script that was sent to them by their upline.
These hunbots do not really care whether you are a stranger or not. If they see you in their friend list, they will surely send you that MLM script promoting an “opportunity of a lifetime”, along with claims that they are making lots of money each month and merely want to share the opportunity with you.
You cannot really keep up with an MLM if you are not going to recruit anyone. Sure, you can receive sales commissions, but most people are not really psyched with buying products from MLMs because of their negative reputation.
Remember that the MLM business model is not sustainable, so as time goes by, you will run out of people to recruit.
MLMs do not really care about how many products you sell. What they care about is how many you buy and how many people you can bring in.
How Much Can You Make?
Seems like Ann Summers is another typical MLM that does not want to provide an income disclosure statement. Well, it is not like Ann Summers is obligated to share this information to the public, but it is just the right thing to do. For a business that seeks growth in both their traditional and MLM fronts, it seems like Ann Summers lacks transparency.
However, Ann Summers is not the only MLM that does not share an income disclosure statement to the public. Most of them do not really do so. In fact, most MLMs I reviewed in this website do not share it at all, which just proves that it is quite a common practice.
MLMs are good at manipulating information in their favor. They also act like they are very trustworthy, despite a lot of sources and data proving otherwise. The only possible way to know how much members can make in MLMs like these are by joining them, which is very risky.
Well, to answer your question, yes, you can make money in an MLM. However, with a lot of miscellaneous expenses, I am sure that what you make cannot cover those.
Things I Like in Ann Summers
Like I said before, Ann Summers is one of the only two MLMs I know of that sells intimate wear and sex toys. I guess this gives them an edge, especially because shopping for sex toys isn’t really an easy matter. It is quite embarrassing to pop by a sex shop too, especially if you want some privacy.
MLMs offer a more personal shopping experience, which means that you can be sure that you can freely shop without having to worry about being seen.
Things I Dislike in Ann Summers
Lack of Transparency
Not only does this company not publish an income disclosure statement, they also do not seem to share how they pay their customers. Yes, the only way to find out is by contacting a hunbot.
They seem pretty reputable, considering how many physical stores they have. But it seems like they are not transparent to people who actually made them successful.
Not everyone really wants to buy sex toys and other related products. For one, not everyone is in a relationship or married. Second, not everyone’s kink involves them. Also, because of the issues I mentioned regarding the sensitive topic of sex, this makes the products difficult to sell and market. Some people are conservative.
It is an MLM
This is an MLM, so it means that a lot of people definitely failed in this venture. In fact, 99% of people who join MLMs fail to make money, and they do not even earn back their initial investment.

I cannot really find Ann Summers’ compensation plan, but I guess this video can tell you more about joining the company as an ambassador.
