When someone here’s the word “coach”, plenty of people will automatically think of one thing. And that is a coach in sports, or even something like a fitness coach.
And they’re right. After all, a good job description for a coach will be that they want what’s best for the team that they’re coaching. They will tell you where you’re lacking and how you could overcome it. They want you to win.
Of course, the term “winning” doesn’t only apply to sports or any kind of competition. Everyone also wants to win in life, and achieve their full potential so they can be more productive at anything that they do.
This is what the BetterUp company aims to achieve for you. They provide life coaching services to individuals and businesses looking to get people to be their best selves whether at work or in their personal lives.

What Is BetterUp?
To start of, let me first tell you what BetterUp is about exactly.
BetterUp is a company that provides coaching services to individuals, or even companies, that require their services. They basically specialize in motivational coaching and mental and emotional improvement more than anything else.
It claims to bring together world-class coaching, AI technology, and behavioral science experts to deliver change at scale. Their coaching services are also highly-tailored to each individual or company, so you can expect that no two coaches are the same.
The company is co-founded by Alexi Robichaux and Eduardo Medina, who also serves as the company CEO and COO, respectively. Notably, BetterUp also employs one of the British royalty himself, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. Prince Harry servers as their Chief Impact Officer.

How Much Does BetterUp Coaching Cost?
BetterUp provides three subscription levels, depending on how many coaching sessions you’d like to avail yourself of. Regardless, each subscription lasts for one month, and you can avail of a different subscription level or stick with the current one depending on your needs.
- 1st Tier ($89) – Gives you only one coaching session for the entire month.
- 2nd Tier ($119) – Gives you two coaching sessions for the entire month. Thus, for every two weeks during the program, you’re going to have a session with your coach.
- 3rd Tier ($279) – Gives you four coaching sessions for the entire month. This translates to a single coaching session every week during the whole month.
Concerns About BetterUp
As a coaching program, BetterUp has received a good number of positive feedback. In fact, it’s been highly recommended in several reviews across the internet, and has been featured in several publications, especially after being associated with Prince Harry.
However, BetterUp also has its fair share of issues and even negative feedback. For the general public, these issues can easily be ignored, but some people take note of this as a reason why they don’t even want to enroll in their coaching services at all.
Here are a few of them.
Prince Harry’s Statement About Quitting Your Job
Prince Harry has made headlines in the past due to one of his interviews. During that interview, he stated that quitting your job can bring you joy.
He claims that the rise in job resignations during the coronavirus pandemic isn’t “all bad”. And that he is pleased that people are putting their mental health and happiness first.
Here’s an excerpt of what he said during the interview.
“I’ve actually discovered recently, courtesy of a chat with Adam Grant, that a lot of the job resignations you mention aren’t all bad. In fact, it is a sign that with self-awareness comes the need for change. Many people around the world have been stuck in jobs that didn’t bring them joy, and now they’re putting their mental health and happiness first. This is something to be celebrated. While on the surface it looks like these last couple of years brought all these issues to the foreground, the reality is these struggles and issues have been brewing for quite some time. We’re just at the beginning of the mental health awakening.”
Harry’s starement has a negative impact on the BetterUp company itself. Because BetterUp’s goal is to provide self-improvement coaching services for companies and their employees. With the goal of not having their employees resign and leave their current company.
And as the Chief Impact Officer, Prince Harry’s comments can reflect on the company. Therefore, as much as Prince Harry’s statement doesn’t mean any harm, it does contradict a lot with what BetterUp intends to do.
BetterUp Being Accused As “Cultlike”
Another common feedback that’s being thrown by plenty of people about BetterUp is that the company seems rather “cultlike” in its approach. It’s not really stated very well as to why it sounded cultlike, but many people have been comparing their approach to something similar to Scientology.
Like they’re just offering a “one-size-fits-all” approach to their life coaching services which is kind of contradictory to what they’re promoting, really.
As stated earlier, BetterUp’s goal is to provide self-improvement to employees so that they don’t have to think about resigning from their company. Plenty of people have stated that a mental health treatment like this is going to be dangerous to employees in the long run.
It’s invasive, and it potentially gives the employer access to examine the state of an employee’s mental health and their personal mental health history. Furthermore, mentally fragile people can be put at risk because they’ll eventually get too invested in this program, and if it fails for them, they may resort to self-harm.
Lack Of Licensed Therapists
Probably the most significant issue about the BetterUp company, is the fact that most of the “life coaches” they employ aren’t really licensed therapists.
Most of them don’t really have the proper credentials and education needed to deal with mental health concerns. And instead, they used a so-called “formula” that they claim could make you better if you just follow them rigorously.
This means that they may not be able to properly handle some cases like trauma, etc. They claim that they may be able to handle it, but it can backfire on their client if not done properly.
But then again, I don’t think the services of BetterUp aren’t really intended for cases like that, given how much BetterUp coaching cost. After all, their main goal is self-improvement for their employees, not actual therapy.
BetterUp Coaching Cost And Concerns: Final Thoughts
Let me just give some final thoughts before I close off this topic about BetterUp coaching cost and concerns.
To summarize, BetterUp coaching can be a good investment, especially if you wish to improve your performance at work, or even in your overall life. While you can just self-help and rely on books and videos to instill those habits in yourself, it’s much better to have some external support from a coach for much better results.
BetterUp also gives a rather high-quality coaching session for its price. It’s no wonder that it has a very good reputation amongst big corporate companies who seek its coaching services.
Then again, it really comes down to your vibes. if career coaching is the thing that will help, go for it. There’s really no harm in trying.
The services that BetterUp provides can be helpful for your personal growth. While $89 can be steep for some people, it could potentially be helpful to you in the long run, for your work, and for your overall life.
However, keep in mind that BetterUp is only intended for self-improvement related to work. It’s not a complete replacement for a proper mental health therapy session.
