It is no surprise that a lot of people are choosing to become freelancers rather than be stuck at a 9-to-5 job. Having some flexibility with your time is often what gets people interested in the freelance life. You could set your hours and be able to do more work for a lot more people. Sure, certain companies have been offering work from home setups during the pandemic. But a lot of them are trying to pullback on it in recent months.

A lot of different skillsets work well in a freelancer setting. If your skills involve using a computer, you can easily sell yourself, in a way, to people who are looking for help that may involve your skillset that you already. You can set your rates and usually a lot of people are willing to pay that amount. Going the freelancer route gives you a better chance of making an income from skills you already have.

It’s no wonder that there are a ton of different websites that offer a training program that can teach you how to earn money online from a skill that you really. Sometimes, a lot of them could also teach you the skills that could earn you money. One of them is Bookkeeping Life. But is it actually worth it? Well, we’re going to find out in this review.

Who is Steve Crisler?

Bookkeeping Life founder Steve Crisler

Steve Crisler is the founder of Bookkeeping Life. There is not really a lot of information that you could find about him online. His journey to creating Bookkeeping Life started pretty much after he graduated from college. He graduated with a degree in accounting. And his first job out of college was for a staff accountant position for a random company. It’s definitely a position that a lot of accounting majors have had once they’ve graduated. He was also a certified public accountant. So he had a license to work an accountant position.

For some reason, I often notice that a lot of the people who went to create their own training program often came from a corporate background. Like, they had jobs working for these companies. And the positions that they had paid well enough for them to make a living. But at some point in that career, they would often realize that the job that they were doing wasn’t really something that felt fulfilling for them. Steve was one of those people. It was three years into that job of his when Steve realized that it wasn’t really for him. Still, he had gotten something out of that job. He learned lessons that he wouldn’t really have known if he hadn’t.

Once Steve quit his job, he decided to bring along a friend of his and move to San Diego, California. The two of them didn’t really had any plans at that point. They didn’t have any work lined up for them when they got there. But they still wanted to take the risk of living there. Despite not wanting to be stuck in an office as an accountant, Steve still wanted to use his skills and knowledge in order to earn money. So he tried to find any listings for freelance accounting or bookkeeping gigs. He managed to get his first client. And it pretty much snowballed from there.

It wasn’t really until 2019 when Steve realized that he could actually share his knowledge to other people. So he decided to start his own training program where he can teach people how to have and run their own bookkeeping service. And that was pretty much how Bookkeeping Life came to be.

What is Bookkeeping Life?

Logo for Bookkeeping Life

Bookkeeping Life is an online training program that teaches you how to start and run your own bookkeeping business.

In order to get access to the training program, you must first sign up for a subscription. Now, most of the training programs that I have reviewed in the past often offer lifetime access for a one-time fee. But it has become a lot more common for them to offer the program through a subscription plan. You can choose to pay $49 a month in order to get access to the training program as well as their exclusive online community. Which, for the most part, is a private Facebook group. You could also purchase an annual plan for $297 a year. It’s $291 cheaper compared to paying $49 every single month.

The training program that Bookkeeping Life offers is called “Learn, Start, Grow.” It is a four-part course that is divided into different lessons. The first part of the course focuses on QuickBooks, an online accounting software. It seems that you are going to specifically use QuickBooks Online Accountant, which seems to be free. This particular part of the “Learn, Start, Grow” course is really just a tutorial in how to use the online software effectively. It seems that every week, you can participate in Zoom meetings with QuickBooks expert Pamela Brown.

The second part of the “Learn, Start, Grow” course is focused on branding. Since you are offering your services to a lot of people, you have to make yourself presentable to them. Considering that you are effectively running your own business, it makes sense that you have a brand for it. In this particular part, you are going to learn how build a brand for your business as well as how to set up a website and a domain for your business.

The third part of the “Learn, Start, Grow” course is focused on marketing. Any kind of business should be marketing themselves to people. Especially if you are mostly operating online. If people do not know that you have a service that they might need, you will struggle a bit to find clients. In this particular part of the course, you will learn where and how to market your business without having to spend a lot of money. You will also learn how to be able to market yourself if you are either an introvert or an extrovert. Similar to the first part of the course, you also get a chance to participate in weekly Zoom meetings with marketing expert Yannick Piessens.

The fourth and final part of the course is focused on working with clients. Now that you have managed to attract people to your business, how exactly do you go about interacting with them? Well, this particular part of the course is meant to teach you how to initiate contact with potential clients. You will also learn how to exactly get what you need from your client when actually bookkeeping. Aside from that, you will also learn how to charge for your services and how to get paid for it. This particular part of the course also includes the opportunity to join in on weekly Zoom meetings with Bookkeeping Life founder Steve Crisler.

Are There Any Bonuses To This?

Aside from the weekly Zoom meetings with Pamela Brown, Yannick Piessens and Steve Crisler, you get access to the virtual classroom where you can see your progress throughout the course. You also get access to their Introduction to Excel course. Another bonus included with a subscription to Bookkeeping Life’s membership program is the Complete Bookkeeper’s Toolbox, which includes a guide on managing client’s expectations, templates for advertising and email copy as well as forms and checklists.

Final Verdict – Bookkeeping Life Review

Bookkeeping Life founder Steve Crisler

Bookkeeping Life is a pretty decent online training program. It does seem that choosing this particular training program doesn’t require you to have any prior experience in bookkeeping. So you could possibly go into the course blind, in a sense, and be able to start running your own freelance bookkeeping business.

I do have to note how weird it is that they include a virtual classroom as a bonus if you decide to subscribe to Bookkeeping Life’s membership program. It is expect for any kind of training program to have a dedicated hub for all of the content included with the program. It doesn’t really seem that the virtual classroom space has features you wouldn’t find in any other training program out there.

The subscription is definitely one of the more affordable ones out there. But finishing the entire course doesn’t guarantee that you will find immediate success in your business. You have to put in a lot of effort into marketing yourself to the type of clients that you want to attract.
