Codesmith Review – Scam Or Legit?

Today, we are going to talk about Codesmith. Is it legit? Find out more in this review.

There are a number of different companies that offer a training program that is focused on programming languages. With so many different tech companies that exist nowadays, there is often a need for people who are skilled with coding for a specific programming language. I have reviewed several programming-related training programs before. So it’s always fun whenever I come across another company that offers their own training program. There is always space for competition when it comes to these types of programs.

Some of the companies that I have reviewed are more holistic in their approach. I have seen a few of them create courses specifically based on a specific role somebody could have at a tech company. They manage to include different subjects based on what type of programming languages that people may need for a specific job. I was surprised that they have put a bit of thought into creating those specific courses. Usually, you can just pick and choose whatever it is that you wanted to learn. Those companies still offer that kind of experience. But I was still surprised that they packaged certain subjects for a specific job type.

There are those that decided to focus on teaching a specific programming language. Codesmith is one of them. Sometimes it could better to have a singular focus instead of trying to broaden the scope of what they teach. I mean, Javascript is one of the common programming languages that is used in software development. So it makes sense that they give a lot of weight to that specific programming language. Because it is often the backbone to a lot of different apps that is already available out there.

But are the courses that Codesmith provides worth the money? Or are you better off with being more of a generalist? Well, that’s what we are going to find out in this review.

Codesmith Review: Quick Details

Who Are Will Sentance, Alexander Zai and Chad Troutwine?

Codesmith co-founder Will Sentance

Will Sentance, Alexander Zai, Chad Troutwine are the co-founders of Codesmith, a training institute that focuses on teaching you the basics of JavaScript. There are varying degrees of information available about all three of the co-founders. But we will go through them one by one.

Let’s start off with Will Sentance. He serves as the CEO for Codesmith. One of the things that I had learned about Will is that he had worked as an analyst for the United Nations in 2009. This was around the time that he was still studying at the University of Oxford. There is no information about what degree program he took. But it may have been related to computer science.

He went on to move to the United States after he had graduated. In 2013, he co-founded a company called Ownly that was focused on helping brands increase their sales. It doesn’t seem like Ownly exists anymore. After that he went to become a software engineer for a cryptocurrency API company. Around the same time, he co-founded another company called Icecomm, which basically helped developers add video chat to their website using a few lines of JavaScript. This particular company lead to the creation of Codesmith. But more on that later.

Next up is Alexander Zai. He serves as CTO for Codesmith. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of information that’s available about Alexander. It seems that he graduated with degrees in biochemistry and chemical engineering. Before co-founding Codesmith, he had worked for Uber and Amazon.

Finally, there’s Chad Troutwine. It seems that Chad was an overachiever. Apparently, he graduated from high school at the age of 16. Then he graduated from college at 19. He has a BA degree, as well as JD, MBA and MPA. So he was definitely someone who was often in the pursuit of learning.

While he was studying in Yale University to get his MBA, he co-founded a test preparation and admissions consulting company called Veritas Prep. That company was acquired in 2019 by a company called Varitas Tutors. Aside from that he co-founded Freakonomics Media as well as a brewing company called Torn Label. Then in 2015, he co-founded Codeswith with Will and Alexander.

What Is Codesmith?

Codesmith is a learning center that focuses on software engineering and JavaScript. Like a lot of these types of coding-focused learning platforms, it all started out as a bootcamp. It does seem that one of the main reasons why Will and the rest of the team decided to create the JavaScript bootcamp was because there was an opportunity to teach people of different backgrounds how to code their own programs, regardless if they want to work in the tech industry or not.

There is not really much else to talk about with regards to what Codesmith offers. It doesn’t seem that they branch out to other types of programming languages. They are solely focused on JavaScript and software engineering. There are three different programs that Codesmith offers. Let’s get into it, shall we?

The first program that we are going to talk about is one of the two introductory programs that Codesmith offers. This program is called CS Prep. It is a two-week online program that teaches you the basics of JavaScript, as well as the best practices when it comes to software engineering and technical communication.

The breakdown of the entire two-week course is interesting. There are three classes that you take from Monday to Wednesday. Both East Coast and West Coast students have their own separate classes every day. Although, both of the classes start at 6:30PM local time and ends at 9:30PM local time. I was surprised to find out that the online classes take three hours per day.

The Saturday classes are the only time when both the East Coast and West Coast students are in the same class together. Compared to the three-hour classes that happen from Monday to Wednesday for both weeks, the Saturday classes are six hours long. The Saturday class for the first week is a bit different to the one for the second week. It seems that the Saturday class for the first week includes the discussion of the solution for the “problem of the day” that was given to them during the Wednesday class. The second Saturday class involves a lot more pair programming sessions. And this where they will also be assigned to groups for the final project that will be presented the Monday after.

The cost of the CS Prep program is a one-time payment worth $925.

Let’s Talk About The Other Programs

The second introductory program that Codesmith offers is called JavaScript for beginners. This particular program is a bit shorter compared to the CS Prep program that we talked about earlier. This program has two Saturday sessions that are six hours long. It seems that they have exercises that you can do to further your learning that you can finish in the days between the two sessions. They also have the option where you can talk to the mentors on Wednesday. Similar to CS Prep, there is also a final project that you will need to present the following Monday. The cost for the JavaScript for Beginners program is a one-time payment worth $350.

Finally, we are going to talk about the flagship program that Codesmith offers: the Software Engineering Immersive. This is either a 13-week full-time course or a 38-week part time course for those who are doing this remotely. Think of this course as the CS Prep program on steroids. It shouldn’t be surprising considering that this is their flagship course. There isn’t really much else that needs to be talked about with regards to this course. It’s an actual course that you might get if you went to college.

The cost for the Software Engineering Immersive is, at the time of writing, $20,925. But it will be priced at $21,800 in 2024. There are multiple payment options for this particular course. Most of the payment plans require you to deposit a down payment worth $3,000. Upfront payments require that you pay the remaining balance of $17,925 before the first day of classes. The installment plans also do something similar. Students must pay $3,000 prior to the start of classes if they’re doing the full-time immersive. Then it’s three monthly payments worth $4,975. For those who are doing the part-time immersive, you have to pay $2,725 prior to the start of classes. Then it’s eight monthly payments worth $1,900.
