Dating Trends of 2023: What to Expect

For many singles in the year 2023, finding a compatible partner might feel like playing a game with ever-evolving rules. It may be difficult to keep up with the constant stream of dating advice that circulates on social media.

TikTok and Instagram are rife with advice on how to identify a love bomber, tricks for improving your dating app profile, and horror stories about the “West Elm Calebs” of the world.

And yet, you know you should “throw yourself out there” and keep your dating life active despite this. It’s understandable that trying to find love in the present period might feel like working a full-time job, with all the expectations placed upon singles.

If this describes your romantic life, you’ll be relieved to hear that the leading dating trends of 2023 predict a dramatic change.

In 2023, dating is expected to change due to a renewed emphasis on personal and relationship wellbeing in the wake of inflation and the approaching recession. The days of blindly scrolling on dating apps, drinking your way through dull first dates, or becoming stuck in an endless conversational rut (or worse, a stagnant situationship) are over. Instead, intention and mindfulness will dominate the dating scene in 2023.

So, what dating trends will dominate the world this year? Keep reading this article to find out.

Dating Trends of 2023

More people trying dating apps.

Dating Trends of 2023 - Dating apps

There are many people who have been skeptical of dating apps in the past but are now open to giving them a try. With the proliferation of dating app success stories (couples in long-term relationships, individuals getting married, etc.), more and more people are coming to terms with the fact that meeting a significant partner online is possible and is no longer shocking or taboo.

The dating pool has likely expanded this year due to the large number of people who are either newly single or eager to give dating apps a try.

Date plans will remain plans.

Last year, social calendars and Instagram feeds were both exploding with post-lockdown activities. UK singles were time-poorer than ever due to the fact that they had two years’ worth of socializing to make up for due to holidays, festivals, and postponed weddings.

With 87% of respondents saying they had the best of intentions but simply lack the time to follow through, the OnlyPlans movement was officially launched.

Reconnecting with exes are more common.

The most popular pair from reality television in 2022 proved that being apart may really strengthen the bonds between lovers. Ekin-sU Turning, the most common motivation for reconnecting with a former lover, has been experienced by 70% of singles.

Half of those who are single say their new partner has helped them see they were wrong to give up on love and that shared history is what ultimately brought them back together.

Several people used the time they had to themselves after being isolated for months (or years) to better themselves in various ways. The problem that used to exist between them may now be moot.

A couple who previously broke up because one spouse had to travel frequently for business and didn’t have time for the other might be able to reconcile now that they both have more stable schedules.

It’s understandable that exes would be more prepared to give their relationship another shot after the epidemic, when millions of individuals made positive adjustments to their lives.

Dating profiles feature real personalities compared to before.

Plenty of Fish found that people seldom use picture filters or modify their photos to make them look more attractive. While Bae Realing, there is no room for self-consciousness.

While over 69% of singles admit to have used a photo filter when online dating in the past, a whopping 74% of singles now feel comfortable posting real life, unfiltered images of themselves on their site.

Physical preferences are no longer what most people look at.

Tastes in physical appearance have evolved. At least 38 percent of singles are willing to date outside of their traditional physical type, and 30 percent of people have stopped going out with the “type” their peers had expected them to. Emotional maturity has surpassed physical attractiveness as the top criteria for a date.

Budget-friendly dates are now trendy.

Dating Trends of 2023 - Budget-friendly date ideas

Money, credit, and debt are all topics that couples are more likely to discuss early on in a relationship. Around a third of singles who use dating apps say they have strict spending limits for dates and themselves.

People now prefer low-key get-togethers with a partner over extravagant events hosted by influential people. In 2023, daters who are good with money will be held in higher esteem.

The feared cost-of-living problem is influencing not only our shopping, socializing, and working out habits, but also our romantic ones. Dinner and drinks may have been the standard dating fare in the past, but experts predict that singles will be less inclined to spend money on dates in 2023.

The approaching recession is likely to affect our love life, as if the rising cost of gas and oil weren’t awful enough. About half of singles say the growing cost of living is influencing how they arrange their dates, and over three quarters say they have avoided or canceled plans with a prospective love partner because of the expense of the date, giving rise to the term “the Cost of Love.”

Sustainability is in.

Whether it’s out in the open or not, we all have some standards we look for in a potential romantic interest. While a love of family and a good sense of humor are still highly valued, the British may be victims of “Eco-dumping” in the coming year.

Around a third of singles think that a partner’s concern for the environment is more important to them than the partner’s physical attractiveness or professional success when it comes to value-driven interactions.

Intimacy is now more blatant.

More people in 2023 are likely to feel comfortable discussing their sexual interests on dates. More than half of those who go on dates say they want to talk about sexual preferences right away.

Although many people expressed an openness to sexual encounters, experts warn that it’s not enough to just state your desires. 34% agreed that they wanted to be able to talk freely about sexuality, but they were neither in a committed relationship nor having sexual interactions at the time.

Emotional dating has become more common.

This movement is about being upfront and honest about your desire to find love, rather than simply a fling, and not being scared to demonstrate emotional vulnerability early on.

Increases in the number of user profiles labeled “seeking for emotional connection” were seen on the dating website Seeking.com. Not just women are seeking out in-depth relationships; one-third of males are, too.

Wanderlove is more accepted.

Those who are looking for a date are becoming increasingly willing to go to distant places to do so. When telecommuting became more common, people felt more at liberty to pursue romantic interests outside of their immediate vicinity.

One-third of Bumble users say they are more receptive to long-distance relationships and international travel than they were a year ago. Because of the increased mobility afforded by WFH after the pandemic, more people have considered becoming “digital nomads,” greatly expanding our pool of potential romantic partners.
