One of the hardest things for a lot of people wanting to buy or sell a property is finding the right real estate agent to help them. There are probably a lot of real estate agents that work in your area. But sometimes it is hard to sift through all of them just to find the right person for the job. I mean, most people settle on the first agent that they meet. But it is often better to have an idea on who might be the best fit for you.
There are a lot of different websites where you could just that, such as HomeLight. I had only heard about this particular company while I was researching for some of my other reviews that I was writing. When you look for a certain website, chances are that you would also get results for its competitors. So I decide to put a pin on it so that I could get back to it eventually. And now, I am finally taking my time to check out everything that it has to offer.
It is always good to see companies trying to answer a dilemma that people face every now and then. Because, let’s face it, you’re not really going to buy and/or sell a property every year right? Sure, you’re probably fantasizing about a listing that you saw online. But you don’t really any intention of buying that property. (Largely because it costs so much more than your current home.) So there isn’t really much of a need for something like that at the moment. But when the time comes, it is good to consider how the services that HomeLight provides differs from its competition.

Who is Drew Uher?

Drew Uher is the founder and CEO of Homelight, a real estate agent matching platform.
There is very little to be known with regards to Drew’s childhood. He grew up in a small town in Nebraska. It didn’t really seem like he had those kinds of moments where something was instilled in him by his parents. He just lived a pretty normal life for the most part, I assume. His journey pretty much started when he graduate from college. He got a job as an investment analyst for hedge fund shortly after he graduated. Despite holding on to that job that he for almost two years, Drew always had an interest to live in a big city. And he did just that. He managed to get a job as an associate for Morgan Stanley which lead him to move to New York, since that is where the headquarters for Morgan Stanley was.
Shortly after a three-year stint at Morgan Stanley, Drew decided to go into business school. After that, he co-founded a distribution and monetization company. Somewhere between all of that, he had met his now wife. Then, the two of them decided to settle in San Francisco. They managed to find a real estate agent that would help them buy their dream home. But, unfortunately, they kind of got screwed over by their agent. So, they went on to search for another real estate agent. But none of the results were to their liking. Soon enough, they were able to find a local agent named Ron Abta. The difference between their previous agent and Ron was like night and day. That kind of was the moment where the idea for HomeLight started. Drew spent about a year or so researching about real estate. But eventually he was able cull the amount of data he needed to launch his service. Thus, HomeLight was born.

What Is HomeLight?
HomeLight is a platform where you can match with a real estate agent that could help you buy and/or sell a house.
The way that this service of theirs works is pretty simple. You are asked on the homepage if you are either a buyer, a seller or both. There is one other choice that says “I’m a Real Estate Pro” but it will redirect you to the page meant for real estate agents. When you click any of the first three choices, it will redirect you to a form that you have to fill out.
If you click on “I’m buying,” you will have to fill out every single text box that shows up on your screen. You can’t really skip any of them in case you don’t have an answer for it. The form will require you to put in a response before you could proceed to the next part. It will ask you the location of where you’re planning to buy a home, the type of home that you’re looking to buy, the amount of money you plan to spend on the home, the timeline for when you plan to buy, and how far into the buying process you currently are. By the sixth question, it will ask you if you are planning to sell your current home. If not, you will then proceed to create an account which includes your name, email address and phone number. Once that’s done, you can start to find an agent through their website.
The process is fairly similar if you click on “I’m selling.” At the start, it will ask you to input the address of the home that you are selling. It will then ask you about the type of the home you’re selling, when it was built, how much it is currently worth, the timeline for when you plan to sell your home, and the condition of your home, and whether or not you already have hired an agent. Similar to when you click “I’m buying,” it will ask you, this time around, if you are also looking to buy the home. I guess this is where both of the choices connect if you were unsure of clicking “I’m buying and selling” at the start. If not, it will ask you to make an account. Once you’re done, you start getting results for agents near the area of the house that you are selling.
It doesn’t seem that there is any fee that you have to pay in order to use HomeLight. You can choose whether or not you want to contact the agents that the platform would recommend to you. I was surprised you don’t have to pay anything just to access the platform. Some of the other platforms that I have reviewed charged their users a “maintenance fee” just so that their account remains active even if they don’t really use it as much.

Final Verdict – HomeLight Review
The good thing about HomeLight is that it doesn’t really force you to choose any of the real estate agents that their system recommends to you. It didn’t really cost you any money to sign up for the service. But, let’s be honest, they kind of want you to choose any of the agents that their system gives you. That’s their whole business model. But it is great they don’t really force you to do so.
That kind of freedom isn’t really prevalent in some of the other similar services out there. So I was really surprised when I saw that they don’t charge you anything just from using the website. That being, I don’t think that I could recommend it to you. Even though that you will get a lot of results for real estate agents that work in the area that you are buying or selling from, it is not guaranteed that the agents you get would give you the results that you want. It happens with this kind of industry. You never really know how they are like until you meet with them face-to-face. It is easy to stop working with them if, at some point throughout the buying or selling process, their work isn’t up to snuff with what you imagined it would be.
