So, Is Society6 Legit Or Scam? Let’s Start With Some Quick Details Of It
- Name: Society6
- Founders: Justin Cooper, Lucas Tirigall-Caste, Justin Wills
- Website: https://society6.com/
- Type: Business Platform
- Niche: Digital Arts
- Price: Varies
- Recommended?: It’s worth a try if you have a talent in arts and drawing. Society6 is a good website platform if you wish to have a side hustle on selling artworks that you made. However, compared to other business models, expect that the income you may receive is quite small and may not be sustainable in the long run.
What Is Society6?

Society6 is a website wherein you can buy different products that have customized artwork on them. The products can range from mugs, phone cases, t-shirts, to even pillowcases, bedsheets, etc.
But even more importantly, Society6 also offers a platform on which, as an artist, you can make money out of your drawings and designs by selling them.
If you’re an artist who loves to draw and make artworks, you can earn money here on Society6. You can submit your artwork to the website and let them be included in the available designs for customers.
Once a customer has picked one of your artwork posted on the site, you earn a percentage-based commission. Of course, this will only happen if the customer buys a product printed with your design.

What Type Of Arts Can Be Submitted To Society6?
Virtually any type of artwork can be submitted to Society6. The website doesn’t discriminate whether the artwork in question is “hand-drawn” or digital art. You can even submit Word art here, too.
Any kind of artwork is accepted. There are only a few guidelines to keep in mind when submitting your artwork.
Artwork Size And Format
First of all, the size. Specifically, the pixel size of your artwork.
The standard pixel size that is allowed for your artwork to be accepted is at least 6500 X 6500 pixels. Take note that this is just the standard size allowed for most small items. This includes shirts, throw pillows, wall clocks, mugs, and others.
However, there are some items that need a very specific pixel size in order to accommodate the artwork in question. Some of those items may need smaller, or even larger, pixel sizes.
For example, phone cases, rugs, bath mats, and other similar sizes are more strict when it comes to pixel sizes. They may need smaller sizes, or larger sizes.

To view the full details of the pixel sizes needed for certain products, you can view them here. The reason for these pixel sizes is to ensure that customers get the best image quality whenever your designs are printed on the items.
The file format of your submitted artwork is also important. For reference, your file images must be submitted in either PNG or JPG file formats to be accepted into the database of Society6.

However, some items do need a specific format to ensure high printing quality. T-shirts, for example, accept both of these formats for printing. But for things like phone cases, only the JPG file format is accepted.
Licensing Reasons
Of course, the artwork in question should be free of any copyrighted content. The artist should also be aware of these intellectual property rights.

This is needed as technically, you’re using those images for commercial purposes, instead of personal.
If the artwork images you submitted are subject to any copyright, Society6 will turn down your submission. However, you won’t be held liable for any kind of infraction if your artwork gets rejected for this reason.
Of course, you won’t run into these kinds of legal problems if you’re going to use an original design of your making.
How Much Can You Earn From Society6?
The amount of money you can earn in Society6 depends on several factors.
But to summarize, unless you’re regularly submitting and promoting your artworks here and you have a steady stream of buyers, you can’t really make much with Society6.
It is a good side hustle when you want to make a little bit of extra income. But if you want to make income passively, without much work, then Society6 isn’t for you.

Society6’s Product Pricing
As previously mentioned, earning in Society6 is commission-based. The amount you can earn in Society6 is dependent on the pricing Society6 puts on their items for sale.
The price that Society6 puts on their customized items for sale is usually dependent on the size of the item in question. The usual cut is around %10 of the retail price. For this reason, a mug with your design will usually give you the least profit, while larger items such as metal prints will usually yield you higher commissions.

There are some exceptions when you’re going to sell the design as an art print. For items like bare art prints, framed art prints, and stretch canvases with your design, you can choose your own price yourself.
Promotion And Activity

Of course, promoting yourself and the amount of activity you do on this site also factors in how much you can earn here.
It’s not enough that you submit your artwork regularly here and hope that others will avail of your designs. If you can, you should also actively promote them on various platforms of your choice, usually social media.
You should also keep in mind that you’re also competing with other artists for sales here. That’s why a good promotional campaign for your works is needed if you intend to earn more from this platform.
But even then, you can only do so much in Society6. The ones who can make around $1,000 per month on this platform are usually the exception.
So, Is Society6 Legit Or Scam? Will You Recommend Joining?
If you’re an artist, and you want to earn money through your artwork designs, then Society6 is a decent platform for you.
Decent, but certainly not great. I researched a few customer reviews on Trustpilot about Society6, and while some of them are great, most of them are just complaints.

I also noticed that there are also negative reviews from some of the artists who attempted to try out Society6.

This is not saying that Society6 is a scam. It’s a completely legitimate service, and there are also quite a few success stories from the artists there. Most of the artists who have succeeded in their business venture in Society6 are even featured on their blog right here.
Also, not all customer complaints on Society aren’t bad. There are also a few people who are quite satisfied with their customer service.

Note that the reviewer in question even said that they’re probably one of the lucky ones who have received good customer service on Society6.
Overall, if you’re expecting to earn a good amount of income on Society6, then you may be a bit disappointed. The income potential that you can enjoy from this website is quite minimal.
The commission that you can get from selling your artworks here is quite small (despite the “bloated” prices of some of the products. Furthermore, since the competition here is quite intense, then you may find yourself aggressively promoting your Society6 services just so you can make an income.
Besides, it’s rather hard to trust a company that has rather low trustworthiness ranking on a website like Trustpilot…

Pros & Cons Of Society6
Pros
- It’s a good additional platform for graphic artists to showcase their works and make a good income out of it.
- You retain complete ownership of all the artwork that you posted on this website. Society6 won’t claim ownership of any of those artworks.
Cons
- There are far too many customer complaints on Society6. This is especially true when it comes to the quality of the items they bought there.
- Customer service can be hit-or-miss. Sometimes, it goes well. But frequently, they’re not really up to spec.
- The income that you’ll gain from selling arts in Society6 isn’t going to be much. It won’t even be enough to completely replace a full-time job at all.
- There are even reports that due to bad customer service, some artists don’t even get their pay at all. Even worse, they just ban your account without any good explanation.
Alternatives To Society6?
If you want to earn money through your artworks, but don’t trust the commission system of Society6, there are plenty of alternatives you can do.
You can take art commissions from various clients. To promote yourself, you can either create an account on DeviantArt or a Facebook page, and publish your artworks there.
Note that when publishing your works, make sure you put a watermark on them. This is so if your artwork gets stolen and published elsewhere, you can enforce legal action on the offender.
Alternatively, you can also offer your graphic design services on Fiverr as a freelancer.
If you’re not an artist, and you still want to have a side hustle to earn money, Rewarding Ways and Clickworker can be good websites to try out.
But ultimately, it’s much better if you just take a moneymaking method that helps you build an online business with a sustainable amount of income.
Is Society6 Legit Or Scam? Final Thoughts
So for the last time, is Society6 legit or scam? Here are my final thoughts about it.
Society6 is still a good platform if you want to earn from your artworks. And especially if you wanted a good side hustle to complement your income.
However, there are better alternatives out there if you want to earn money through your artwork. Moreover, some of them actually pay you more than what you can get on this platform.
Overall, Society6 is still worth trying if you have a passion for the arts. But don’t expect that you can make a lot of money out of it. At beast, it only works as a side hustle.
And even so, there are much better side hustles to take out there. If you wanted a more lucrative and potentially higher-paying method to make money online, I know of one that you might be interested in.
