Matilda Jane MLM Review: Legit Fashion MLM or Scam?

Today we will be reviewing a company called Matilda Jane. Is Matilda Jane a pyramid scheme or scam? Find out in this Matilda Jane MLM review.

It is highly likely that you do not know about this company at all, at least until someone told you about it. I could imagine it right now to be honest – you, just sitting in front of your computer, and a hunbot just randomly messages you something about “an opportunity to make money where you are your own boss and you manage your hours”.

You shouldn’t be surprised about not hearing about this company before, to be honest. MLMs rarely do any advertising. They leave all that work for their members, and well, not all members have the capacity to run proper ads on the company’s behalf. Take note that even if they do, they will not be compensated.

As sad as it sounds, MLMs have successfully infiltrated social media. MLMs have made a statement in social media by seeing all its users as potential customers, and by using their army of hunbots to spam whoever they want and hound them to buy products by convincing them and they need them.

Before we go further in this Matilda Jane MLM review, I will define two terms first: MLM and pyramid scheme.

MLM members make money by selling products and recruiting new members. In a pyramid scheme, however, members could only make money by recruiting people. Pyramid schemes are illegal.

As a disclaimer, I am not affiliated with Matilda Jane in any way.

Hopefully this Matilda Jane MLM review can help you decide whether you want to sign up for the company or not.

My #1 Recommendation

What is Matilda Jane?

Matilda Jane is a multi-level marketing company that sells women’s clothing. Their focus is selling clothing for women and girls of all ages, as well as accessories and home products.

Matilda Jane’s clothing are sold exclusively by their distributors, which they refer to as Trunk Keepers.

Matilda Jane products

Looks like a pretty standard company that sells clothing, right? Yeah, I do not see anything unique about them either.

The company was founded by Denise DeMarchis in 2006.

You can watch this video below to learn more about the company.

Matilda Jane is currently based in Indiana, United States.

How Do MLMs Work?

Welcome to the section where I share why MLMs are a bane in our society, and why I think the FTC should ban them.

First off, I think it is only appropriate that we talk about why MLMs tend to overprice their products. It is rare for MLMs to sell reasonably priced stuff.

Whenever I see how overpriced MLM products are, I am not surprised anymore. Most MLMs I know of practice the same tactic.

However, even though this is the norm, I still cannot help but think about how ridiculous it is and why it makes little to no sense.

Let’s take fashion MLMs, for example. I, for one, love to shop online. There are some go-to brands I choose for my clothes and shoes, and it is very rare for me to consider other brands. I am willing to go a bit over my budget just to buy the brand I want because I am already sure that it is of high quality, and definitely worth my money.

Sometimes, I also buy from small businesses, but this only happens when the product I want is not available in my favorite brand. To be honest, I think I should support small businesses more. I recommend buying from small businesses instead of buying from MLMs.

MLMs have this mindset that their products are “premium” and that “you have never seen them before”, which does not make sense since I haven’t encountered an MLM that has any breakthrough product. In the case of fashion MLMs, this is more obvious because, seriously, there are millions of fashion brands out there.

Bottom line is, buying MLM products are a waste of money. Support small businesses instead. If you want to make money, invest in something legitimate.

Is Matilda Jane a Pyramid Scheme?

Since Matilda Jane members earn money both by selling services and recruiting new members, then it is safe to say that Matilda Jane is not a pyramid scheme.

However, since Matilda Jane is still an MLM, expect not to make money if you have no plans on building your downline. Recruiting will earn you significantly more money than actual product selling.

This just makes Matilda Jane look like a pyramid scheme in disguise, doesn’t it?

Pyramid scheme vs Multi-level marketing

Like Cabi, La Señorita Jolie, and Seint, Matilda Jane is not a pyramid scheme.

Is Matilda Jane a Scam?

No, Matilda Jane is not a scam.

However, this should not be enough to assure you to invest in the company. Just because it is not a scam does not mean that you should hurry up and sign up for them right away.

When it comes to MLMs, I suggest doing your own research to dig up the truth. Most of the articles online about MLMs are published by the MLMs themselves, so of course those articles will only say good things about them.

Some good sources information for MLMs are third-party sources, like this review you are reading right now. Third-party sources do their research, have no bias, and are unaffiliated with the company. This means that these sources will publish an article that only states the truth, no matter how good or bad the company’s reputation is.

Forums are also a good source of information because they are being constantly updated. People are often interacting in them, which means the information remains fresh and up-to-date.

Testimonials from ex-members will also tell you how an MLM runs, and how it treats its members.

How to Make Money from Matilda Jane

Since Matilda Jane is an MLM, there are only two major ways to make money with the company. and these are:

  1. Selling products
  2. Recruiting members

You can also earn money through bonuses and benefits that the company is offering. To do that, however, is a whole other story.

Being able to reap benefits is only possible if you have created a downline. Creating a downline is easier said than done, since recruiting people to an MLM is a difficult process.

If you are joining this MLM to earn passive income, then this is the only way to do it. You need to recruit in a weekly basis to earn a sustainable income in order to stay afloat.

MLMs do not really care about how many products you sell. What they care about is how many you buy and how many people you can bring in.

This is sounding more and more like a pyramid scheme, doesn’t it?

How to Join Matilda Jane

Joining Matilda Jane is a pretty easy process.

All you have to do is fill-up this form with the required information, and you are all set.

The start-up cost for joining Matilda Jane is $1,600. This includes your clothing and accessory inventory, wooden rack to store and display your goods, your welcome gift, and some marketing materials.

Sounds very pricey, doesn’t it?

Things I Like in Matilda Jane

Established Company

This company has been founded in 2006. The fact that this company is still running means that whoever is in charge of the business is doing a great job of managing it.

MLM companies have a very short lifespan because of how unsustainable the business model is. The fact that this company has survived longer than three years is quite impressive.

I guess we could say that Matilda Jane has found its target market and now has a loyal customer base.

Lots to Choose From

I am actually quite impressed by Matilda Jane’s catalog.

There are a lot of products to choose from, and even if that is the case, they stick with their niche (clothing and accessories).

The home products are a nice addition too since this company caters to mothers. It is a one-stop shop, basically.

Things I Dislike in Matilda Jane

High Startup Cost

As much as this company tries its best to appeal to the masses, that exorbitant price tag of $1,600 just to be able to start your Matilda Jane business is a huge turn-off.

Not everyone has that kind of money. To be honest, if you want to sign up for an MLM, that means that you don’t have much money, right? You want to sign up to earn extra cash.

It is quite a challenge to earn back that $1,600 you invested too.

Deposit Required

Other than that, you are also required to pay a non-refundable deposit of $300 to become a Trunk Keeper.

It’s like all this company cares about is taking your money at the very start and just abandoning you soon after.

Buying Required

You are required to buy inventory at the start of every Selling Season. Yes, REQUIRED. You need to do it if you want to stay in this business.

Ridiculous Quota

To stay active in Matilda Jane, you are required to make $1,5oo worth of sales every month. Now that is quite ridiculous.

If you cannot meet that quota, I guess what you need to do is purchase products worth that amount for yourself.

Saturated Market

Fashion brands

Other than those ridiculous quotas and fees that you have to meet, you have a bigger challenge in your hands.

Matilda Jane is one of the millions of fashion brands that are in the market today. If you sign up for Matilda Jane, you have to compete with a lot of tough opponents, like the brands in the photo.

Take note that these brands have better advertising, better marketing, and better products. These brands are also well-known and are backed by celebrities.

How are you supposed to compete with all these?

Simple. You cannot.

It is an MLM

This is an MLM, so it means that a lot of people definitely failed in this venture. In fact, 99% of people who join MLMs fail to make money, and they do not even earn back their initial investment.

Final Verdict – Matilda Jane

Before I end this Matilda Jane MLM review, I would like to share a few more thoughts with you.

As much as you want to succeed in an MLM, the system will do everything in its power to make sure that that does not happen.

Even if you meet quotas and make great sales, joining an MLM requires you to recruit people. No matter how much you want to work on your own, you cannot simply do that here.

First off, let’s start with how expensive the startup fee is. I assume that Matilda Jane has set that price in order to recruit only the ones who are seriously committed to the business.

However, for an average person who just wants to join an MLM as a side hustle, they cannot afford it. Even if they can, that quota they need to meet just to stay afloat is quite ridiculous.

Along with those, there are a lot of fashion companies in the market out there competing with each other. How does Matilda Jane stand out compared to them?

Well, it just doesn’t. You cannot possibly compete against big companies who do a far better job on marketing.

That’s it for my Matilda Jane MLM review. Hopefully this Matilda Jane MLM review helps with your decision.
