Trademark Engine Review – Scam Or Legit?

Today, we are going to talk about Trademark Engine. Is it legit? Find out more in this review.

For a lot of entrepreneurs, having a registered trademark for their product or business can be beneficial in the long run. Let us be honest: It is hard to think of a name for a product or a business. If you are somebody who runs a coffee shop, for example, you are bound to use a word that relates to coffee as part of the name. You want people to know that you are shop that offers coffee-based drinks. With so many coffee shops that already exist in the world, you are bound to settle on a very generic sounding name. A lot of us try to make sure that the name that we make is unique. But sometimes it can be exhausting.

A lot of larger companies often make it a point to register the name for their business to a patent and trademark office. Even if you might not use the name for anything, having the rights to your ideas is often the best way of combating people who steal your work. That’s why a lot of these larger companies are often litigious when it comes to their intellectual property. Because if somebody uses a famous company’s logo and something negative happens to the business using that logo, it affects the company that actually holds the rights to it. That’s why a lot of other businesses pay a hefty price just to license the trademarks for products that they make.

Sometimes, filing paperwork can be such a hassle. You are spending a bit of time just to file for a registration for a trademark. You are going to spend a good chunk of your day going to the registration office just to file it. And sometimes you don’t really know if your registration would actually get approved. So you try to find ways to alleviate some of the hassle that comes with filing paperwork.

Surprisingly enough, there are a few companies out there that seem to offer services that might actually alleviate some of that hassle. One such company is Trademark Engine. But is the service that Trademark Engine offers actually any good? Or are you better off trying to do the work on your own? Well, we are going to answer those questions in this review.

DISCLAIMER: I am in no way affiliated with Trademark Engine in any way. This is just an independent review. You are still free to do whatever you want. But I hope that this review shapes your opinion on whether or not you should try their service out.

Trademark Engine Review: Quick Details

Who Started Trademark Engine?

Trademark Engine founder Travis Crabtree

Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information with regards to who started Trademark Engine. Their website states that they were started in 2016 by, in their words, “an experienced team of a lawyer and several technologists.” But they do not mention anywhere in the website who that lawyer is or who those technologists are. The website does mention that in early 2022, they had hired somebody named Alan Godfrey to serve as their chief executive officer.

From what I could find, Alan Godfrey has been working a corporate job since the early 1990s. Most of his roles in the different companies that he has worked at has been as vice president of business and corporate development. He has jumped from company to company. But his title pretty much stayed the same. So I guess that he was just really good at working in that specific role regardless of the what the company does. In 2015, he started his own consultation firm that is focused on, you guessed it, business and corporate development. Aside from being CEO at Trademark Engine and its sister company Swyft Filings, Alan Godfrey also serves an advisor at an investment management firm and as board member for an advertising agency.

It is interesting to note that Trademark Engine actually is under Swyft Filings, since that is company that Alan uses in his LinkedIn profile. From what I could find, it does seem that a man named Travis Crabtree is actually the co-founder of Trademark Engine. Travis was previously a sports anchor in the mid to late 1990s. After a short stint as a sports anchor, Travis decided to get into law school. Once graduating and passing the bar, Travis went on to work as commercial litigation attorney for almost 18 years. He joined Swyft Filings six months into its start. Swyft Filings was originally co-founded by Charles and David Lubbat.

It was in June 2016 when Travis Crabtree decided to start Trademark Engine with some of the people working at Swyft Filings.

What is Trademark Engine?

Logo for Trademark Engine

Trademark Engine is a company that offers an assistance service that will help you through the process of filing an application for trademark registration. On their website, Trademark Engine states that they are not, in any way, a law firm. They can not provide any legal help whatsoever. Their job is to basically help you with certain parts of the filing process. You will still need a legal expert in order to go through other parts of the process.

There are three different packages that they offer. The first is the Basic package, which costs a one-time payment worth $99. It does not include the fees that the United States Patent and Trademark Office might require you to pay when filing an application. That is just what you are paying Trademark Engine to help you with the process.

When you choose the basic package, you’re basically paying Trademark Engine to do the work that you could have done on your own. In this case, it’s a bad thing. Most of the things that they include in the package like preparation and filing of your trademark application, searching the trademark database and delivery of the registration certification can be done through the actual website for the USPTO.

If you click on the Get Started button for this package, you’re going to fill out a form that asks you what type of trademark you’re going to protect, etc. All of those things are also in the actual registration form on the USPTO website. So you’re basically just paying Trademark Engine to copy what you’ve already written down on the form that you just filled out. As for searching the trademark database, you can easily do that for free because it’s a federal website. You can just search for it on your own. Even the delivery of the registration certification comes from the USPTO. They will give you a copy of the certificate that you’ve registered your trademark immediately when you finish the filing process. But just because you’ve filed for registration does not guarantee that it will get approved.

The second package that they offer is the Standard package which costs $149 and the subsequent fees from filing at the USPTO website. This package includes the benefits of the Basic package as well as a cease & desist letter template and custom trademark transfer and assignment form. You also get lifetime access to Trademark Engine’s customer service. This particular package would only make sense if your initial registration application is approved. So neither of the inclusions would be useful if the application was rejected.

They have recently introduced an attorney-led registration package that costs $399 for the initial service and the subsequent filing fees. This package includes everything in the Standard package as well as consultation with a trademark layer prior to filing, “comprehensive trademark search” and a free trial to trademark monitoring alerts in case your trademark is being infringed.

Final Verdict – Trademark Engine Review

Nothing about the services that Trademark Engine offers is worth trying. It is interesting how they had just introduced an option to have an attorney help you with the filing for your registration. Because that is how it should’ve been in the first place. Neither the Basic or Standard package is worth paying because you could easily do the filing process on your own, for the most part. It is insane that those were primarily the two packages that they had been offering at the start of the company. But it is more insane that they were charging you $99 for something that you could have done on your own in the first place.

Choosing either the Basic or Standard package does not necessarily guarantee that you would have gotten an approval for the trademark that you registered. It takes a while to find out the verdict of your application. You would have pretty much just wasted almost $100 if you had chosen to actually try out the Basic package that Trademark Engine offers. Even the Standard isn’t really all that worth it, considering that you’re paying $50 more towards a service that doesn’t really guarantee that filing through their help would lead to an approval of your trademark registration.
