Wealthy Affiliate Review: Scam or Legit?

Today we will be reviewing a platform known as Wealthy Affiliate. Is Wealthy Affiliate legit? Find out in this Wealthy Affiliate review.

Recently, things have gotten pretty stressful. The pandemic is still in full swing, and despite having taken all precautions like wearing masks and getting vaccinated, a lot of people still test positive to the virus.

I am pretty sure that at this point, we are all feeling drained and we all just want to rest to take a break from how much our lives have changed. We all thought that things would be okay in two weeks.

It has taken years, and things are still not normal. We probably underestimated how serious the pandemic is.

Because of this, a lot of people lost their jobs. If you get to keep your job despite this situation, then consider yourself lucky.

Ironically, it turns out that billionaires became a lot richer because of the pandemic. The poor, however, continue to grow poorer.

Sounds unfair, right?

This is why some people choose to turn to side hustles in order to get extra money. After all, there seems to be no other way to get money than working more. Stressful it might be, you have to do it.

That is when you stumbled upon Wealthy Affiliate. Should you pay for it or not?

Before you decide to pay for this platform, you should read this Wealthy Affiliate review first. You should check if it is worth the time and money before you decide to commit to it.

DISCLAIMER: This is a fully independent review. I’m not affiliated with Wealthy Affiliate in any shape or form whatsoever.

What is Wealthy Affiliate?

Wealthy Affiliate Review - Wealthy Affiliate intro

Wealthy Affiliate is a platform for affiliate marketers. It is one of the most well-known and reputable platforms, boasting over 1.4 million members (both free and paid) in total. Actually, Wealthy Affiliate is one of the few products I am familiar with in the past.

Wealthy Affiliate is a platform which is used to help you with building your very own affiliate marketing business. It is considered as an all-in-one platform, as it is training, website and software hosting, and many more in one package.

Basically, you will be getting everything you need here in order to start your business. You need not look for other programs as everything you would need can be found here.

As a one-stop shop for your affiliate marketing business, you need not pay separate subscription fees. You only pay the specific membership fee, and you can use all the tools all you want after that.

The good thing about Wealthy Affiliate is that even though you are fairly new to the affiliate marketing business, you will be able to use it. After all, they also provide you with the training you need to get you on track with your goals.

In essence, paying for membership will grant you with the following:

  • Basic training to help you find the perfect niche to focus on
  • Website building tools
  • Training about organic traffic
  • Training about paid traffic
  • Subscriptions to tools and widgets that can make the job easier
  • Introduction to affiliate marketing and affiliate programs you can join to begin your journey
  • Coaching and a community of fellow learners and marketers

As you go further into the review, I will be discussing how it works, the kinds of tools you will be getting, and so much more. I suggest you read up until the end.

Before we get further into the review, let us discuss affiliate marketing first. What is it about, really?

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing

If you don’t know what affiliate marketing is, then let me explain in this part of the Wealthy Affiliate review.

Wealthy Affiliate will teach you all about affiliate marketing, but what type of business is this? How do you make money here?

The process is actually pretty simple. However, it is easier said than done.

It goes like this. Affiliate marketing is marketing based on performance. You are basically affiliated with a certain company or business, which then rewards you if you bring customers to them through your affiliate link or any equivalent of that.

Every time they make a sale which is referred by you, you make money. Simple as that.

There isn’t really a fixed compensation. Rather, it depends on the products or services you refer customers to. A certain percentage of that gets paid to you, while the rest goes to the company.

If you want another explanation as to how the business model works, then I suggest you watch this video.

Who Are the Brains Behind Wealthy Affiliate?

Wealthy Affiliate creators

Wealthy Affiliate was founded in 2005. Two people from Canada brought it to life. Their names are Carson Lim and Kyle Loudon.

Before they decided to establish Wealthy Affiliate, they worked as bloggers and  entrepreneurs.

During its first launch, it only offered a membership to keyword databases. It then started expanding from there.

It has became the biggest and most popular training portal used by affiliate marketers as years went by. The main aim is to help build as many online businesses as it could possibly can, while following the model that was designed by its creators.

Other than being just an educational portal, it has developed into being an all-in-platform which now provides quality tools and other types of resources which affiliate marketers can make use of.

Basically, the platform includes everything you could ever need to start a successful affiliate marketing business: adequate training, business tools and website hosting and world-class support.

Do I Recommend Wealthy Affiliate?

You may be asking if I think this is worth it. Well, this portion of the Wealthy Affiliate review will reveal my verdict.

It seems like Wealthy Affiliate has been gaining positive traction since its release. Most websites I found which have signed up for the platform have nothing but praises for it.

However, is it truly worth the money? Well, at least according to my research, it is definitely worth it, especially for beginners who are still trying to get a grasp of the business model.

From years of experience in the business, you can expect to get a quality product and some good lessons which will definitely benefit you in the long run. Like I said before, it is definitely designed for beginners who want to learn a new way to make money.

You get guidance from one of the most reputable platforms for affiliate marketing, which is a good experience. It is better than having to pay thousands to some guru who just popped out of nowhere promising you free money.

You also get access to some fairly decent tools which you can use to build your affiliate site, and for more things. I rarely see this being offered together; training courses are often bundled separately from business tools.

Despite all of this though, Wealthy Affiliate is far from perfect. Sure, it can help you a lot as a rookie marketer, but it lacks in a lot of aspects.

Let me give you a picture of the things I observed about Wealthy Affiliate, and what I like and dislike about the platform.

If you want to make money online, check out this logical business model that helped 6000+ people.

What I Like in Wealthy Affiliate

If you want a beginner-friendly service which can help you with starting out as an affiliate marketer, then Wealthy Affiliate is perfect for you. This part of the Wealthy Affiliate review will tell you what I like about the platform.

What’s good about Wealthy Affiliate is that even though they have the tendency to oversell themselves, they have something to show for it. They continue to be at the top.

You will be learning the basics from them, as they provide you with the training you need to get started. You need not look for a course that could teach you one, which saves you a lot of money.

Also, even if you count free resources, you cannot just find all the resources you need in one sitting. In Wealthy, everything is ready for you. All you need to do is to dedicate time to learning.

Along with the provided training, you also get access to the useful tools which will help you with your business. Domain hosting is also provided, meaning that you need not spend extra on that. That is not cheap if you are doing that by yourself, by the way.

There is also a community of fellow affiliate marketers which could help you get on your feet. You can find new friends there with similar goals and maybe a business partner too.

What I Dislike in Wealthy Affiliate

Like I said before, this platform is not perfect. It comes with quite a lot of issues that you should be aware of before purchasing, so that you would not regret your decision. I will be revealing things that I dislike about this platform in this part of the Wealthy Affiliate review.

For one, the trainings included in here are from 2013. It could already be considered as outdated, as a lot have already changed in affiliate marketing since then.

This means that the information that you will be getting may be irrelevant and unimportant now. Basically, it seems like this platform does not really update the training information included.

I am not really very psyched with products that over outdated information, as it could do you more harm than good. Google’s algorithm is already way too different now compared to before,

Also, I noticed that the people who made the included trainings aren’t even in the platform anymore. Shouldn’t they have updated this with trainings from people who are still in Wealthy Affiliate?

What’s more, the variations of trainings are not really present. It is more of text-based, which could get tedious real quick. Remember that most people do not really have the attention span required to read large volumes of text at a time.

I am not really against text-based training materials, since they did wonders for me in the past. My main concern here is that they should update the materials into different forms for people who may face difficulties with understanding the training material.

Some people who use Wealthy Affiliate also make some outlandish claims, which are definitely not true. I will elaborate on these later.

How Much Does Wealthy Affiliate Cost?

Before you sign up, you are probably thinking whether you can afford it or not. Well, this section of the Wealthy Affiliate review will tell you the costs you need to look out for.

Wealthy Affiliate is available via subscription basis. You can avail the free plan for no cost, while you can pay $49 monthly ($19 for your first month) for premium access. There is also the option to pay the annual cost upfront for $359 if you want to save money.

The following is included in the free plan:

  • Access to basic training session
  • Community access (7 days only)
  • One basic website (more details to be explained later)
  • Access to the affiliate program
  • 30 free searches for the keyword tool

If you want to opt for the premium plan instead, here is what you will get:

  • Access to all the available trainings
  • Community access where you can interact with other members
  • Direct messaging feature
  • As much as 50 websites
  • 2x higher affiliate payout
  • Direct access to available coaches and the support team

Basically, you can start with the free plan if you are still on the fence about whether you should join Wealthy Affiliate or not. It is free, after all.

You can also try the free plan for as long as you want, and for the provided trainings alone, this already seems worth it. Actually, some training materials in the free plan are actually up-to-date, which is good.

You get to learn the basics of affiliate marketing for no cost, while a lot of basic courses being offered by gurus online can cost you up to thousands. I guess this is what makes Wealthy Affiliate the top choice.

Is the Free Plan Enough, Though?

Well, not quite. In fact, it lacks a lot of necessary features, like the keyword tool, direct messaging feature, access to the support team, and the community access. I think these are all important, as you cannot really do it all by yourself.

If you want to be an affiliate marketer, you need to train properly. You need to learn as much as you can and stand out, so that people will come to you instead of other affiliate marketers. The free plan doesn’t really address your needs. It is only for the training process, in my opinion.

The perks included here are not really perks, to be honest. The thing is, some of these so-called perks wouldn’t really be of much help to you.

As this is a freemium model, I think they really want you to avail of the premium plan if you want the smoothest experience possible. Of course, if you want to test it though, then feel free to use the free plan as much as you want.

Also, remember the free basic website they included as a perk? Well, that is actually a SiteRubix website. Ever heard of that? Well, me neither.

As a rookie, I guess it is okay to start with basic tools. If you want to grow and look more reputable, then I suggest getting your own domain, and build your own brand.

A subdomain wouldn’t really help you with affiliate marketing, so when you feel like you are 100% sure of being a marketer, then I suggest you get your own domain.

Overall, the free plan can train you with the basics. The premium plan will be the one assisting you with your business.

Wealthy Affiliate Training Overview

This section of the Wealthy Affiliate review will give you the overview of the training being provided.

Like I said previously, Wealthy Affiliate has a training program which can teach you all about affiliate marketing. It can teach you the basics, which you could benefit from especially if you are still a beginner.

It is composed of lessons which can help you learn the basics of affiliate marketing.

You can actually complete the training in one day if you wish. However, I suggest that you fully understand the lesson first before moving onto the next one.

Free Training

This is pretty simple to understand, so I think you can finish it quickly. Lessons include the following topics:

  • Mindset of an affiliate marketer
  • Building your very own personalized website
  • All about plugins
  • Keyword research
  • Content creation

Premium Training

Of course there is also training available for the premium plan. Also, you cannot expect that basic training is enough for you to make money, right?

The training included in the premium plan is all about the earning aspect, which includes the following:

  • Free traffic. These lessons about generating traffic are important, as you will have to get as many visitors on your sites as possible if you want to make money.
  • How to make money. This pretty straightforward. Here, you will be learning about how to start making money by looking for affiliate programs, getting people to click your affiliate links, and partnering with businesses.
  • Social media. This is all about building your social media presence in order to build trust and credibility. You will also learn about branding.
  • Content creation. This is about how to make the proper content that can drive users to your site.

Affiliate Training Bootcamp

There is another training program here which is dedicated to training you about the more technical aspects. The lessons include the following:

  • The WA dashboard
  • Writing readable content for your website
  • Marketing your brand
  • Taking a break
  • Backing up your site
  • Guide to a better looking and functioning website
  • Internal linking
  • Writing and sharing reviews
  • Some bonus and supplementary material

I think the trainings in here are pretty helpful, as they talk about the more advanced aspects. You can definitely learn what you need to learn.

Things That Are Not Present in the Trainings

My main concern is that a lot of important things seems to be missing from the trainings that is being provided. They claim that failure is not possible, but without these, you are bound to fail miserably:

  • SEO
  • Internal and external linking
  • Google AdSense
  • Email marketing
  • Social media marketing
  • Outsourcing content and tasks

Affiliate marketing is no joke. It is a serious career and business, and you have to learn a lot of things in order to be successful in it. You have to keep learning everyday, which could be tedious.

Remember that hard work equates success, so if you want to succeed, you need to deepen your knowledge.

I think what is important here is that you cover all the bases. I hope this section of the Wealthy Affiliate review can help you look out for the vital things that the trainings have failed to offer.

Wealthy Affiliate Support and Community

The Support Team

I think this is a plus for me, as I have encountered a lot of platforms that do not cater quality customer support.

In Wealthy Affiliate, you get fast answers and convenient responses to your concerns. All you meed to do is reach out to the support team, state your concerns, and they will address it.

There is an option to reach out to the support team privately, so you need not be pressured to have to post your message publicly. This means that you get a personal experience with them, which means that they truly care.

However, do not expect them to provide all the answers for any type of questions. I think you should know yo yourself whether your questions should be asked or not.

The Community

Wealthy Affiliate Review - Wealthy Affiliate leaderboard

It looks like the community is composed of hundreds of thousands of members, meaning that you can definitely find people online no matter what your timezone is.

From my research, the average response time from the community members takes 1.8 minutes. Interactions are around 32,000 every day.

There is a leaderboard which serves as a fun way to reward those who are most helpful.

What makes this community a good one to be part of is that it seems like everyone wants to help out. Whether it be a concern that already has an answer, people are still keen to help out.

Along with that, you are also given a chance to meet new people who are in the same niche as you. You have the opportunity to make new friends and connections.

I think the forum boosts camaraderie between its members, which is a good thing. Not only are people learning about affiliate marketing, but also about building friendships and connections.

Is Wealthy Affiliate a Scam?

I’m sure that this is one of the questions you are yearning answers for. Well, in this section of the Wealthy Affiliate review, I will be answering that.

No, Wealthy Affiliate is not a scam.

Despite of the issues I have presented in this review, those do not really point out that Wealthy Affiliate is a scam. They are very much legit, and they would really have that many users if they are not legit all these years.

They introduce themselves as a training program and platform for affiliate marketers, and they do live up to that promise.

Also, the definition of a scam for me is that it is something that just runs off with your money without giving you what you paid for. Wealthy Affiliate is far from that.

I think my main concern with them is that they could get pretty aggressive with their marketing, which actually does them more harm than good. People mistake them as a scam because their tactics are exactly the same as scammers you can find in the internet.

Also, the platform is designed to lure you in. That is what freemium software do, anyway.

How Much Money Can You Earn Using It?

The usual claims made by Wealthy Affiliate is that they will give you all the things you need to succeed. For me though, if you avail of the basic plan, there is no way to make money at all.

Well, I am actually not surprised with that. After all, you wouldn’t really expect to get something big without not having to pay for anything, right?

In the case of Wealthy Affiliate, they give you just the bare minimum in the free plan. How you will use your newly acquired knowledge will determine whether this is the right business for you or not.

On the other hand, you cannot really expect to make it big just by knowing the basics. There is so much more to know about affiliate marketing than what Wealthy Affiliate can teach you about.

I think once you put what you learn into practice, it could get you into the right direction. After all, there is nothing that hard work cannot achieve, right?

You have to know how to build your brand, and keep on hustling if you want to succeed. You need to build your community, learn how to get as much traffic as possible, and partner up with reputable brands.

I think you can make money just by learning the basics, but the chances of that is very slim. The money here can be made if you join their affiliate program.

Wait, There’s an Affiliate Program?

Yes, Wealthy Affiliate actually has their very own affiliate program.

Signing up as an affiliate for them will earn you commissions. The average commissions that can be earned through lifetime sales is actually a decent amount.

Just like other affiliate programs, the way you can make money here is by getting people to sign up for Wealthy Affiliate. As long as that person whom your referred pays their monthly subscription, you make money.

If you manage to get people to subscribe to the premium plan, you get a percentage of the sales. This means that the longer they stay with Wealthy Affiliate, the better.

I guess this is what makes this platform stand out. Not only do you learn to be an affiliate marketer, but you can also avail of their affiliate program here.

This is the main reason why people promote the platform, and why it has become well-known.

Controversies Surrounding Wealthy Affiliate

In this section of the Wealthy Affiliate review, you will be learning about the controversies surrounding the platform.

Well, not all platforms are made perfect, and this one is no stranger to controversy.

There is the saying that when there is smoke, there is fire. As usual, some controversies that have arose regarding this company has some actual truth to it.

Well, as you can see, this company has some controversy too, and I will be explaining a few of them to you.

Is Wealthy Affiliate an MLM? Or Is It a Pyramid Scheme?

The reason why Wealthy Affiliate is often mistaken as an MLM is because just like an MLM, you can make money by getting people to sign up.

How does a pyramid scheme work, though?

In a pyramid scheme, you would have to pay for products upfront. They are then encouraged to recruit more people to do the same. By recruiting new people, you earn money by earning commissions. These commissions depend on the value of the products you sell.

It is quite a pay-to-win system. You pay for getting in, then you get paid by getting people in. It is a highly unsustainable business model, because you are going to run out of people to recruit in the long run.

Well, Wealthy Affiliate does look like an MLM, but if you look at it more closely, it isn’t. Sure, you have to pay if you want the premium plan, but if you want commissions, then you feel free to join the affiliate program.

You may earn a commission, but that is still highly dependent on your skills.

What is an MLM Again?

MLM stats

An MLM is simply a company which sells products as a front to hide their true business, which is what makes them scummy.

They do not really have the best quality products or a target audience for them. They just want people to join the company as product distributors, which is how they get rid of the products.

But who would want to buy mediocre products, anyway? No one does.

The main reason why people join MLMs isn’t because they like the products, but because you can earn money here. All you need to do is to recruit people to the company to do the same thing.

You can also get people to buy products from you as customers, but good luck with that. The commissions you earn from selling products is very low compare to the commissions you get from recruiting.

10 Shocking MLM Statistics That You Need to Know

  • Almost 99% participants of all multi-level marketing companies lose money, according to the FTC.
  • There are 38% more chances of you profiting from your own any kind of small business than joining these MLMs.
  • Success rate of an online business, which will give you financial and time freedom, is 20% more than joining MLMs for making money.
  • The odds of you winning a lottery worth $10k among 10,000 people is 300 times higher than actually making money from MLMs.
  • According to the AARP foundation, 47% distributors of all MLMs lose their money. Apart from this, 27% do not make a single penny.
  • In the remaining 26% that actually make money, 53% of them make less than $5000/year.
  • 39% of those 53%, who are making $5000/year quit because recruiting and selling crappy products to friends and family members jeopardized their relationships.
  • Forget about building a long term business with MLMs, because 50% of all MLMs participants quit within one year.
  • 75% people that joined MLMs say that they will never again join any kind of MLM.
  • A poll was conducted in 2018 among 1050 MLM distributors and it was concluded that most of them made 70 cents an hour and 20% of them did not make a sale. 60% of them made less than $500 in sales over the past 5 years and 32% of them acquired credit card debt to finance their MLM involvements.

It May Not Be an MLM, But…

Well, if you join the affiliate program, you are basically one of those people who want to make money. And the only way to make money is by getting people to pay for the Wealthy Affiliate premium plan.

How do you find people who would want to join, then?

You make a website dedicated to advertising your affiliate link. It could be any kind of website, really.

Now, read that again. Doesn’t that sound like what people in MLMs do?

Most MLMs I know of provide a customized site to their members which they use to recruit people for the company. It seems like you would be doing the same.

Take note though that most of the success stories that you heard regarding Wealthy Affiliate are about people who managed to succeeding with recruiting a lot of people.

What separates this platform from MLMs though is there is no pressure whether you want to recruit people for the affiliate program or not. MLMs tend to be a lot more forceful and predatory.

Some Ridiculous Claims by Wealthy Affiliate

If you want to make money, then you need to work hard for it. That is simply how the world goes, and it has been like that for centuries.

This is why it is pretty easy to tell a scam from a legitimate opportunity. A scam usually make outlandish claims like tripling your money in only a few days.

There is no such thing as easy money or free money.

To me, it seems like Wealthy Affiliate is selling you a dream, not a product. It tells you that you need to believe in it and that will guarantee you success, but of course, that is highly dependent on a person and their circumstances.

Let me enumerate a few claims they made.

It is Very Easy to Make a Website

There is no way that this is true. I mean, yes, you could make a website for less than a day, but that doesn’t mean that you can make a functional website.

Your goal is to make a website which is designed to rake in as many people as possible. You couldn’t possibly make a website which is visually-appealing, highly functional, and can earn you money fast. It takes time to set up a website. Even a simple blog takes time to make.

You also need to be knowledgeable in things like hosting, SEO, and design.

Wealthy Affiliate has their very own website builder, which could build you a site for maybe an hour. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be a website ready for your business, though.

Failure is Impossible

Wealthy Affiliate Review - Wealthy Affiliate no fail

Everything you do has a chance of failure, even though you are good at it. That also applies here.

I appreciate the creators’ confidence for their product, but that doesn’t mean that they can just leave claims like these.

Do they mean that you are guaranteed to succeed just by joining Wealthy Affiliate? If that is the case, then how come not everyone is a member?

Simple. It’s because they exaggerated.
